Limitations
- The cream requires time to be absorbed other wise it can be absorbed into the secondary dressing
- Where a secondary dressing much be used shortly after applying the cream make sure that their is a silicone interface between the cream and the dressing. The cream is too thick to pass through the pores of the silicone dressing but still allows exudate to be collected by the secondary dressing
- Where the cream is used in large areas the absorption of the silver needs to be assessed for long term treatment plans
Precautions
- Systemic absorption of sulfadiazine can occur, particularly in patients with extensive burns or compromised skin barriers, leading to potential adverse effects such as leukopenia, nephrotoxicity, and hypersensitivity reactions.
- Common side effects include:
- Local irritation
- Burning
- Pruritus
