Primary Complementary Dressings
Uses
- Wound:
Enterocutaneous fistulas
Cut drains when they are no longer on suction
Pig tail drains where there is leakage around the insertion site
Old drainage insertion sites where the output is still high - Faecal Stoma:
New stomas
When a patient does not bring their own ‘bag’ in and the bag is falling off (if it is a ileostomy you will require a stoma ring)
Positives
- Wounds:
Allows for drainage of fluid that is too much to be absorbed in regular dressings
Allows for accurate measurement of output
Can contain odour of output
Can be managed (emptying) by patient if they go home with it
Caters for drains being cut and placed into the bag when suction is lost - Faecal Stomas:
Allows for monitoring of a newly formed faecal stoma for assessment of viability
Allows accurate monitoring of output
Can be cut accurately to the size of the stoma
Limitations
- Wound:
Adhesion to skin can be complicated when skin is macerated, indurated or in a crease of the anatomy (eg. Groin area) - Faecal Stomas:
Can leak if the output of the stoma is large and type 7 on the Bristol stool chart due to the small amount of hydrocolloid material on the flange.
Patient’s can think this is the ‘bag’ they are going home with and become alarms
