Quick Overview
Aquacel Extra is a highly absorbent, sterile, non-woven wound dressing that employs Hydrofiber® technology. It is designed to manage high-exuding wounds by absorbing wound fluid and converting it into a soft gel. This process helps maintain a moist wound environment, supporting the body’s natural healing process, while facilitating the autolytic debridement of non-viable tissue without harming newly formed tissue.

Uses
- Clean Granulating Wounds: Use for wounds with granulation tissue deficits to support healing and maintain a moist wound environment.
- Exudate Management: Ideal for wounds producing moderate to high levels of exudate, ensuring effective absorption and minimizing the risk of maceration.
- Aquacel Ribbon-Specific Application: For wounds with blind cavities, Aquacel Ribbon can be safely packed into the wound bed. Multiple ribbons can be tied together into a continuous string if required.
- Documentation Requirement: Always record the number of pieces used to ensure accurate monitoring and safe removal.
Positives
- Absorbs and wicks away thin exudate, such as haemoserous and serous fluid.
- Transfers absorbed fluid into a secondary dressing for enhanced management.
- Facilitates wound debridement upon removal of the dressing.
Limitations
- If used without an absorbing secondary dressing, exudate may pool, leading to maceration of the peri-wound area.
- Removal of the dressing before it is fully saturated with exudate can cause trauma, which can be prevented by saturating the dressing with normal saline or sterile water prior to removal.
Precautions
- If the wound bed or exudate has adhered to the dressing due to insufficient moisture, apply sterile normal saline or sterile water to rehydrate the dressing, reducing trauma during removal.
