Uses

  • Indications for Use: Suitable for high-exudating wounds that require antimicrobial action.
  • Application in Smaller Infected Wounds: Ideal for smaller infected wounds where moisture management can be closely monitored to prevent the dressing from adhering to the wound bed. In this case, moisten the Acticoat with sterile water, apply to the wound bed, then cover with Jelonet (non-adhesive dressing), followed by an occlusive dressing like IV3000.

Positives

  • Effective Antimicrobial: A powerful antimicrobial that remains effective even in the presence of significant exudate.
  • Flexibility: Offers excellent flexibility, allowing it to conform to various wound shapes.
  • Ease of Use: Simple to apply and manage, making it user-friendly in clinical settings.

Limitations

  • Limited Silver Nano-Crystal Effectiveness: Contains enough silver nano-crystals to remain fully effective for only 3 days.
  • Exudate Limitations: Does not allow purulent or thicker exudate to pass through, unlike alternatives such as Acticoat Flex.
  • Activation Requirement: Must be activated solely by soaking in water for proper functionality.

Precautions

  • Activation Requirement: The product must be activated by soaking in water only to ensure proper functionality.
  • Silver Allergies: Should not be used in patients with known silver allergies.
  • Exudate Requirement: Suitable only for use on wounds with exudate, as the dressing relies on moisture for effectiveness.
  • Adhesion Risk: If the dressing dries, it can adhere strongly to the wound bed, causing potential trauma upon removal.
  • Moisture Transfer: The dressing alone may not hold sufficient exudate or moisture to effectively transfer silver crystals into the wound bed. Additional moisture support, such as a paraffin dressing, may be needed to optimize moisture levels in drier wounds.
