Aim of Dressing
The aim of all compression is to aid the venous return of blood flow from the lower extremities. Due to non-compliance and the Australian climate FarrowWraps are being used to increase the compliance of people who require compression. This reduces the chances of spontaneous venous ulcers and aid the calf muscle in pumping the blood back to the heart.
Tips & Tricks
Assess the patient's mobility and if the patient can't lift their leg for you then you will need a colleague to come help you

Setup your sterile field with your sterile products. Clean the wound thoroughly. If there is slough or cellular debris present consider taking the patient to the shower and using a Debrisoft loofah.
Lather the leg up with HyalO4 – Skin cream. Best practice would have been to leave the cream for 20min (please do if time allows) . The distributor states it is not absorbed into dressing products.
Apply mesalt. Don’t worry that the cream is underneath it. That will be absorbed and then the mesalt will absorb the exudate that follows.
Apply zetuvits. The cream will hold it is place whilst you get your tubiform.
Because we are in the hospital and we dont have access to a washing machine a oversized tubular bandage was used to protect the FarrowWrap from the cream and exudate. ** NO COMPRESSION IS TO COME FROM THE BANDAGE ** Please make sure the tubular bandage goes above where the FarrowWrap will begin. This is for comfort.
FarrowWraps are designed to mimic compression bandages and they are designed with a 50% bandage overlap already. All you are doing to tightening the straps to a comfortable level for the patient. Compliance is the key here. Some pressure, even if its not at the appropriate level, is better than none.
Apply appropriate foot wear. In this case its a non-slip sock or it could be a shoe.
General Notes
What have we learnt:
1.Have the patient in the bed as it will save your back
2.It is best if you can wait 20min to let the cream(s) soak in
3.FarrowWraps are easy to put on when the patient is laying down. There is a different technique for the patient and yourself when the patient is sitting out of bed
4.Talking to and educating the patient and their family is easy and simple when doing the dressing
