Treatment Goals

The patient is a 92 year old man who after a long conversation with the medical consultant stated he did not wish to make it to 100. The goal for the patient was to reduce the odour of the wound and allow the patient to go home with minimal intervention. Surgical options were discussed but patient not inclined at the time of assessment.

Aim of Dressing

Minimise odour and allow patient to continue with his Activities of Daily Living.

Frequency of Dressing Change

Everyday

Prepare Sterile Field

Clean wound bed

Gently clean the growth. If agitated too much it could bleed

Apply inadine

Double layer (minimum). This also reduced the chances of the growth bleeding as the dressing one crust onto it

apply charcoal dressing

The charcoal dressing is bulky to protect the growth. If a thinner dressing is needed you can use Acticoat.
