Treatment Goals

Reduce irritation by providing a protective barrier between the skin and moisture surrounding it.

Aim of Dressing

Sooth the skin and allow for the re-epithelialisation of the skin occur without further irritation and aggravation to the patient.

Frequency of Dressing Change

Everyday

Skin irritation

Where a resident has excoriation of the groin, breast(s) or skin fold(s) regular creams should not be used as they add to the moisture causing the skin irritation. A barrier film should be applied

Step 1

Clean the affected area

Clean the area well preferably in the shower with a pH neutral soap free wash

Step 2

Dry the area very well

Gently dab the area till the area is very dry

Apply Barrier cream

Apply a thin amount of the barrier cream. It should not be applied thickly. More of a smear than the amount you might apply with a moisturising cream.

Skin folds

Where the area is a skin fold, such as with breast tissue, fold a zetuvit in half with the green side being on the inside and insert this into the fold once the cream has dried.

Repeat

Repeat step 3 twice a day. Repeat the whole process daily
