    Patient has known IAD

    Patient has had bouts of incontinence and their perianal skin, sacral and/or thigh regions have epidermal loss from the effluent.

    Step 1

    Clean the affected area

    Thoroughly clean the affected area. This could mean a shower, bed bath with some pH neutral soap or soap free wash

    Step 2

    Apply Stoma powder

    Apply stoma powder heavily and then brush off the excess. The powder will adhere to only the wet areas caused by the epidermis loss. It is crucial you brush off the excess powder. This step will allow the Stoma paste to adhere to the wet areas where as it would normally slide off.

    Step 3

    Apply Stoma paste

    Apply the stoma paste. You MUST use the convatec paste as it contains alcohol which dries out the area. It will however sting the patient for the same reason. Apply thinly. *TIP - wet your finger to aid smoothing it out. Do NOT saturate the paste otherwise it will have no benefit*

    Repeat

    After each bout of incontinence clean the area again. This could just be using warm clothes with a small amount of soap and dried thoroughly.

    IAD has improved

    Once the patient's IAD has stopped weeping you can transition to category 1's care plan (as follows)

    Apply Comfort Barrier wipes

    Apply Sage Molicare Skin Barrier Cream

    Repeat

    After each bout of incontinence clean the area again. This could just be using warm clothes with a small amount of soap and dried thoroughly.
